Woodland Township & Chatsworth
Woodland Township is a vast, lightly populated Burlington County municipality in the New Jersey Pinelands. Chatsworth is its principal village and community center, surrounded by forests, cranberry and blueberry agriculture, streams, lakes and preserved Pine Barrens landscapes.
Woodland Township at a glance
A Pine Barrens Township
Woodland is entirely within the Pinelands National Reserve. Its land-use pattern is unusually rural for New Jersey: large tracts of forest and preserved land, cranberry and blueberry agriculture, small residential clusters and a limited number of commercial properties along Routes 72, 532 and 563.
Route 72 crosses the northern part of the township and begins at Four Mile Circle. A small group of highway businesses serves residents and shore-bound travelers.
Large portions of Woodland fall within Pinelands Preservation, Special Agricultural Production and Pinelands Village management areas, making Pinelands review important for many land-use and development questions.
History, Chatsworth & the Blue Comet
Woodland Township was incorporated on March 7, 1866 from portions of Pemberton, Shamong, Southampton and Washington townships. Chatsworth grew as a Pine Barrens crossroads and railroad community. The township continues to highlight its connection to the Blue Comet, the Central Railroad of New Jersey passenger train that once linked Jersey City with Atlantic City.

The preserve's Chatsworth Lake entrance at 1450 County Road 532 provides access to a classic Pine Barrens landscape of water, forest and former cranberry-growing land.
A tea-colored Pinelands river popular for canoeing and kayaking. Woodland-based outfitters and state forest access points support day trips.
Primitive and family camping is available at state forest locations including Godfrey Bridge and Hawkins Bridge, with reservations and current regulations handled through New Jersey State Parks.
A scenic Wharton State Forest waterbody and launch area used for paddling, fishing and quiet outdoor recreation.
The surrounding Pinelands support specialized plants and wildlife. Visitors should stay on appropriate trails and respect protected habitats and private working farms.
Chatsworth Cranberry Festival
The annual Chatsworth Cranberry Festival is the township's signature public event. The 2026 festival is scheduled for Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., rain or shine, with a juried craft show, food vendors and live music.
